Companions
Overview
Zero Company has six story companions: authored Operators who join Hawks through the campaign, as distinct from the custom recruits you build yourself.
They differ from recruits in three ways. Their appearance is fixed, though outfits can still be changed. Each carries a unique Talent no other Operator can have. And two of them hold exotic classes that cannot be assigned to anyone else.
They are not exempt from permadeath, and they can leave.
The Six Companions
| Companion | Species | Default class | Unique Talent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trick | Human (clone, CT-3301) | Soldier | For My Brothers |
| Cly Kullervo | Human (Mandalorian) | Exotic: Mandalorian Warrior | Combat Jump |
| Tel-Rea Vokoss | Tognath | Exotic: Jedi Padawan (locked) | Strong with the Force |
| Luco Bronc | Umbaran | Standard (sniper) | Combat Gas |
| Jae Mordant | Human | Standard | Final Shot |
| Kabb Uppercut | Felshi | Standard | Uppercut |
Hawks is the seventh authored Operator but is the player character rather than a companion, and carries the Fearless Leader Talent.
Which Companions Can Change Class
This is the question that decides how you build a squad, and the answer is not the same for all six.
| Companion | Can change class? |
|---|---|
| Tel-Rea Vokoss | No. Always a Jedi Padawan, in both Specialization slots |
| Cly Kullervo | Partly. Her first slot is Mandalorian Warrior; after Cycle 18 her second can be any standard class |
| Trick | Yes, freely. Late in the campaign he also gains the Clone Commando unlock without losing either slot |
| Luco Bronc, Jae Mordant, Kabb Uppercut | Yes, freely, into any of the eight standard classes |
A companion’s unique Talent survives a respec. Cly keeps her jetpack whatever class she is moved to, and Jae keeps Final Shot. Talents are a separate layer from Specializations: see Talents.
Unique Talents
Each companion’s Talent is always active regardless of class:
| Talent | Operator | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| For My Brothers | Trick | Withstands being Downed and automatically revives the next turn. Upgrades improve the health recovered and add injury resistance |
| Combat Jump | Cly Kullervo | Jetpack jump to a location for 2 Advantage and no AP, pushing enemies out of position and applying Burn. Upgrades extend the range |
| Strong with the Force | Tel-Rea Vokoss | Gains Harmony stacks each turn, raising Lightsaber Deflection and damage |
| Combat Gas | Luco Bronc | Gains Sharpened Senses stacks, increasing percentage Chance-to-Hit |
| Final Shot | Jae Mordant | Immediately assists and eliminates low-health targets. Upgrades raise the health threshold |
| Uppercut | Kabb Uppercut | Knockback melee attack that refunds the AP if it defeats the target |
Companions Can Be Lost
Companions are subject to permadeath, and separately can leave the company through story choices.
Two different things can remove a companion from the roster.
Permadeath. Companions are not exempt. An Operator downed with two existing injuries is Killed in Action and gone for that campaign. Losing Tel-Rea takes the Jedi Padawan class with her, since no recruit can hold it.
Dilemmas. At authored points, Hawks faces a decision and every Operator gives an opinion. The choice changes Bonds, and some Dilemmas carry consequences beyond that: the narrative lead has confirmed that choices can drive a character away from Zero Company entirely.
Low approval alone does not cause a departure. It is the authored story moments tied to specific relationships that do.
Hero Missions
Conversations with companions at the Pit, the Den’s social space, unlock unique hero missions. That makes companion relationships a source of playable content rather than only stat bonuses. See Base Management.
Bonds and Cross Training
Each pair of Operators holds a Bond, raised by completing Operations and Tactical Missions together and by using Call for Backup. Each Bond level unlocks a Cross Train, a benefit applied to both Operators in the pair, and the choice is permanent. See Bond System.
